Illinois social media taxes
It is time that the state of Illinois must get rid of this current batch of legislators and governor. Ridiculous gas taxes, property taxes the highest in the country. Refusal to follow federal income tax rules to omit tips and overtime pay. Taking outstate road funds and funneling to Chicago public transportation. Threats to retired people to tax their currently not taxed income.
Now JB Pritzker is suggesting a statewide social media tax. Pritzker clains the tax would raise $589 million dollars in new revenue. Stating that there would be a gradated scale starting at $.10 per user. A tax would be implemented on social media sites with at least 100,000 user. I Here are some of the details:
$0.10 per user for up to 500,000 users
$40,000 plus $0.25 per user up to 1 million
$165,000 plus $0.50 per user beyond 1 million
Pritzker states his rationale centers on holding tech companies accountable for tracking what youth and using "addictive algorithms.”
However this is Illinois and Illinois is in competition with California and New York for governmental stupidity and he stresses that there is a projected $399 million shortfall due to federal funding cuts under the Trump administration.
While we are at it, if Pritzker wants to copy something then by all means, copy a proposal mirrors a similar social media tax introduced in Chicago, which of course is facing expected legal challenges from tech firms. It would be too logical to look at states that are successful and in fiscal order. Of course, it would help that Illinois would get rid of their so strong reliance on members of the Chicago and Illinois Democratic party.
Not that Republicans are perfect, but Illinois is has been so dominated by this spend and tax and tax and spend. The idea that government does everything. Idiotic.
From my exile in Iowa I would like to see the people in Illinois have a recovery. But it will take people of both parties to stand up to this idiot. From paying for school and medical care for illegal aliens to making financial promises that are un-keepable to bastardizing your property to devalue it, the state of Illinois can only recover from this mess by having a wholesale changeover in government.
